Vindningene refers to the windings or coils of conductor used to create electromagnetic fields in electrical machines and power transformers. The term is common in Norwegian technical language and covers coils of wire that surround a magnetic core or are arranged in a magnetic gap. Windings are essential for converting electrical energy to magnetic energy and vice versa, and they determine many of the performance characteristics of a device.

Windings are typically categorized by their function and placement. Primary windings receive input voltage, while secondary windings deliver output voltage in transformers. In electric machines, windings may be located in stators or rotors. Windings can be designed for different configurations, such as single- or multi-phase arrangements, and may be air-cored or placed on a magnetic core formed by laminated steel to reduce eddy currents and improve efficiency.

Construction and materials focus on conductor quality, insulation, and mechanical form. The conductor is usually copper or aluminum, often enamelled to provide insulation between turns. Insulation classes must withstand operating temperatures, with additional barriers to prevent arcing and moisture ingress. Windings are wound on spools or bobbins and may be impregnated with resin or varnish to improve mechanical strength and thermal management.

Testing and quality control include winding resistance measurements, turns-ratio tests for transformers, insulation testing, and high-potential (hipot) testing. Proper winding design and manufacture are critical for reliability, efficiency, and safety in electrical equipment.
