Világháború, meaning "world war" in Hungarian, refers to large-scale global conflicts involving many of the world's great powers. Historically, this term is most commonly associated with the two major global wars of the 20th century. The first, often called the Great War, began in 1914 and concluded in 1918. It involved the Central Powers, primarily Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria, against the Allied Powers, which included France, Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and later the United States. The conflict reshaped the political map of Europe and led to the collapse of empires.

The second global conflict, known as World War II, lasted from 1939 to 1945. It pitted the Axis powers, chiefly Germany, Italy, and Japan, against the Allies, a coalition that included Great Britain, the Soviet Union, the United States, China, and France. This war was even more widespread and destructive than the first, characterized by unprecedented industrial-scale warfare and the Holocaust. The outcome of World War II led to the rise of new superpowers and the establishment of international organizations aimed at preventing future global conflicts. The term "világháború" thus encapsulates these pivotal and devastating periods in human history, marked by immense loss of life and profound geopolitical shifts.
