Világháború

Világháború is the Hungarian term for World War. It generally refers to the two global conflicts that took place in the 20th century, World War I and World War II. These wars involved a vast number of countries and had profound and lasting impacts on global politics, economics, and societies.

World War I, known in Hungarian as "az első világháború," lasted from 1914 to 1918. It was characterized by trench warfare and the involvement of major European powers. The war's conclusion led to significant geopolitical shifts, including the collapse of empires and the redrawing of national borders.

World War II, referred to as "a második világháború," occurred from 1939 to 1945. It was even more widespread and destructive than the first, marked by new military technologies and ideologies. The Holocaust, a systematic genocide of Jews and other minorities by Nazi Germany, is a tragic and central aspect of this conflict. The war ended with the defeat of the Axis powers and the rise of the United States and the Soviet Union as superpowers, setting the stage for the Cold War. The term "világháború" encompasses the immense scale and devastating consequences of these two catastrophic global events for Hungary and the world.
