Venymäliuskojen, also known as strain gauges, are sensors used to measure the mechanical strain of an object. Strain is a measure of deformation representing the displacement between nearby points on a material, divided by the initial distance between them. Venymäliuskojen work on the principle that the electrical resistance of a conductor changes proportionally to its tensile strain.

A typical venymäliuska consists of a thin metallic foil arranged in a grid pattern. This grid is bonded to the surface of the object being measured.
