Venpunkter is the Danish term for venipuncture, the puncture of a vein with a needle to obtain a blood sample or to establish intravenous access. The procedure is a routine medical task carried out by trained healthcare professionals under sterile conditions, with emphasis on patient safety, comfort, and correct labeling of specimens.

Common puncture sites for venipuncture are in the arm. In adults, the antecubital fossa veins are favored, especially the median cubital vein, followed by the cephalic and basilic veins. The median cubital vein is typically the first choice due to its size and stability. In children or when veins are difficult to access, punctures may be made on the dorsum of the hand or forearm. For peripheral intravenous therapy, suitable veins in the forearm or hand are used; central venous access involves larger, deeper veins and uses different techniques.

Technique overview: the patient is seated or lying down, a tourniquet is applied above the puncture site, and the vein is located and stabilized. The skin is cleansed with antiseptic. A sterile needle of appropriate gauge (commonly 21–23 gauge for adults) is inserted at a shallow angle (about 15–30 degrees). Blood is drawn into evacuated tubes or a cannula is threaded for IV therapy. After collection, the tourniquet is released, the needle is withdrawn, and pressure is applied to stop bleeding, followed by site care and specimen labeling.

Safety and considerations: potential complications include hematoma, infection, phlebitis, nerve or arterial puncture, and vasovagal reactions. Proper technique, patient assessment, and adherence to guidelines minimize risk. Repeated attempts should be avoided, and access sites should be cared for according to institutional protocols.
