vassoura

Vassoura is the Portuguese term for a broom, a hand-held cleaning tool used to sweep dirt from floors and other surfaces. A typical vassoura has a head of bristles bound to a long handle and is designed for indoor or outdoor use, depending on the bristle material and head construction.

Materials and construction: Broom heads may use natural fibers such as straw or broomcorn, or synthetic bristles made of nylon or polyester. The bristles are attached to a head by binding, stitching, or clamping, and the head is connected to a wooden, metal, or plastic handle. Some designs have angled heads to reach corners.

Types: Vassoura de palha (straw broom) is common for outdoor use, while indoor models often use softer synthetic bristles. Other varieties include push brooms for large areas, angle brooms, and vassourinhas for corners and upholstery.

Usage and care: Brooms are used with sweeping motions to collect debris, usually with a dustpan. After use, clean and dry the head to prevent mold, and replace bristles when worn. Store in a dry place to extend life.

History: Brushing tools date to ancient times; modern broom heads with bound bristles became widespread in the 18th–20th centuries with advances in manufacturing and materials.
