Vapenrum is a term used in Swedish to describe a designated room or chamber for storing arms, armor, and related equipment within castles, fortifications, large estates, or naval facilities. Historically it referred to a secure space where garrison or household weapons were kept ready for defense, separate from living quarters and other stores.

In medieval and early modern contexts, the vapenrum was part of a broader defensive complex. It was often situated near a gatehouse, battlements, or the keep to facilitate rapid deployment in case of attack. Contents commonly included melee and pole weapons such as swords, halberds, pikes, and shields, as well as armor, maintenance tools, and sometimes ammunition. Because powder and gunpowder posed a significant explosion risk, storage for such materials was typically handled in a separate, specialized powder magazine (krutkammare) with stricter security and ventilation.

Architecturally, a vapenrum could be a simple storeroom or a fortified chamber with reinforced doors and limited access. Racks, hooks, chests, and storage furniture organized weapons and armor, while inventories and keys were managed by designated custodians or guards. The design emphasized security, fire prevention, and controlled stewardship, reflecting the military and domestic needs of the owning estate.

In modern usage, the term survives mainly in historical descriptions, museum restorations, and discussions of castle architecture. It is often contrasted with broader facilities like arsenals, which encompassed larger-scale production, procurement, or centralized storage. The vapenrum thus represents a specialized, historically common solution for arming and equipping a household or garrison within a defensive setting.
