Valgusimpulsi is a term used in biomechanics and sports medicine to describe a specific type of foot strike pattern during locomotion. It refers to a situation where the foot lands with an inward rolling motion, often referred to as pronation. This inward roll can occur at the ankle joint, leading to the heel rolling inward, or at the midfoot and forefoot, causing the arch to flatten.

This gait characteristic is not inherently pathological and can be a normal adaptation for shock absorption, particularly on hard surfaces. However, excessive or rapid valgusimpulsi can contribute to various musculoskeletal issues. When the foot pronates excessively, it can alter the alignment of the kinetic chain, affecting the knees, hips, and even the lower back. This can lead to conditions such as shin splints, plantar fasciitis, patellofemoral pain syndrome, and Achilles tendinopathy.

Several factors can contribute to valgusimpulsi, including genetics, foot structure (such as flat feet or hypermobile joints), muscle weakness or imbalances in the lower leg and foot, and improper footwear. Training errors, such as rapidly increasing mileage or intensity without adequate conditioning, can also exacerbate issues related to valgusimpulsi.

Assessment of valgusimpulsi often involves visual observation during walking or running, as well as gait analysis. Treatment typically focuses on addressing underlying causes. This may include strengthening exercises for intrinsic foot muscles and supporting muscles in the lower leg and hip, flexibility work, and the use of appropriate footwear or orthotics to provide support and control excessive pronation.
