Valgusdetekte is a medical term describing the detection and measurement of valgus alignment in a limb, most commonly the knee. It refers to the processes and tools used to identify an outward angulation of the distal segment relative to the proximal segment, which can arise in isolation or as part of a deformity such as genu valgum.

Detection usually begins with clinical assessment. Healthcare providers observe limb alignment in standing and during movement, check for patellar tracking issues, and perform basic measurements with a goniometer to estimate the joint angles. Quantitative evaluation is often achieved with imaging, including standing long-leg radiographs to determine the hip–knee–ankle angle, mechanical axis, and coronal-plane alignment. In more detailed workups, three-dimensional imaging, weight-bearing CT, or MRI may be used. Modern approaches also incorporate gait analysis and inertial sensors or smartphone-based tools to track valgus tendencies during motion.

Applications of valgusdetekte span pediatric and adult populations. In children, it helps distinguish normal, self-resolving physiological valgus from pathological deformities that may require intervention. In adults, accurate detection informs treatment planning for osteoarthritis, corrective osteotomies, or knee replacement, and aids in monitoring progression after trauma or during rehabilitation.

Limitations include variability in patient positioning, radiographic technique, and interobserver differences. Consistency requires standardized protocols, clarity about whether measurements reflect static alignment or dynamic function, and, when possible, multiple assessments over time.
