Valgusõlmeid, commonly known as bunions, are bony bumps that form on the joint at the base of the big toe. This condition occurs when the big toe pushes against the next toe, forcing the joint of the big toe to get bigger and stick out. The skin over the bunion can become red and sore.

The exact cause of bunions is not fully understood, but genetics is believed to play a significant role. Foot shape and structure, which can be inherited, may make a person more prone to developing bunions. Certain foot conditions, such as flat feet or abnormal foot mechanics, are also associated with their formation. Wearing tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes is often cited as a contributing factor, as these can put pressure on the big toe joint, exacerbating the condition. However, shoes themselves do not cause bunions.

Symptoms of valgusõlmeid include a visible bump on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe, swelling, redness, and pain or tenderness around the big toe joint. The pain can be intermittent or constant and may worsen with activity or when wearing certain shoes. Over time, bunions can make it difficult to walk or wear regular shoes.

Treatment for bunions depends on the severity of the symptoms. For mild cases, non-surgical options are often effective. These may include wearing wider, more comfortable shoes with a roomy toe box, using padding or bunion cushions to relieve pressure, and taking over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen to reduce pain and inflammation. Orthotic devices, such as shoe inserts, can help control abnormal foot mechanics. In more severe cases, when pain is significant and interferes with daily activities, surgery may be recommended to realign the toe and remove the bony bump.
