In the literature and world-building that feature them, vakaajia perform charting and star-navigation, interpret weather patterns, and safeguard oral histories about voyages, coastlines, and harvests. They are often depicted as both technical experts and cultural custodians, blending practical seamanship with ritual storytelling.

Etymology and role. The name is typically described as derived from vaka, a word for boat or sea, together with a suffix meaning guardians or keepers in the Vakaian language.
