Vaiheerotuksia is Finnish term used to describe phase separations, the process by which a homogeneous mixture becomes nonuniform and divides into distinct phases with different compositions or properties. In physics, chemistry and materials science, vaiheerotuksia refer to demixing phenomena that occur when thermodynamic conditions push the system out of the single-phase region of a phase diagram.

Two primary mechanisms underpin vaiheerotuksia: spinodal decomposition and nucleation-and-growth. Spinodal decomposition happens when the homogeneous state becomes thermodynamically unstable and infinitesimal fluctuations amplify spontaneously, producing interconnected structures that coarsen over time. Nucleation-and-growth involves the formation of discrete nuclei of a new phase that grow by diffusion, typically requiring an energy barrier to be overcome and resulting in droplets or grains separated by interfaces. In biology, phase separation is also used to describe the formation of biomolecular condensates within cells, where proteins and nucleic acids demix to create functional compartments. The outcome of phase separation depends on factors such as temperature, composition, interfacial tension, and diffusivity, and is mapped by phase diagrams and kinetic pathways.

Characterization methods include optical and electron microscopy, small-angle scattering (SAXS or SANS), and calorimetric or rheological measurements, which help reveal morphology, domain size, and thermodynamic drivers. Understanding vaiheerotuksia enables control over material properties—such as mechanical strength, optical behavior, porosity, and separation efficiency—and informs processes in coatings, polymers, and nanomaterials.
