A vacuum brake booster, often referred to by its Dutch name vacuümrembekrachtiger, is a hydraulic brake assist device commonly found in automobiles. Its primary function is to reduce the physical effort required by the driver to apply the brakes. It achieves this by utilizing the vacuum generated by the engine's intake manifold. When the brake pedal is pressed, a valve opens, allowing engine vacuum to act on a diaphragm within the booster. This vacuum force multiplies the pressure applied by the driver's foot, transmitting it to the master cylinder, which in turn actuates the braking system.

The vacuümrembekrachtiger consists of a housing containing the diaphragm and a control valve. The control valve regulates the flow of vacuum to either side of the diaphragm, thereby determining the amount of assistance provided. When the brake pedal is not pressed, the valve is in a neutral position, and there is no vacuum assistance. As the pedal is depressed, the valve shifts, applying vacuum to one side of the diaphragm and releasing it from the other, creating a pressure differential that pushes the diaphragm and activates the brake system. This significantly lessens the force needed at the pedal, making braking more comfortable and less fatiguing for the driver. Modern vehicles may employ more sophisticated electronic brake-force distribution systems, but the fundamental principle of vacuum assistance remains a common and effective technology.
