Uropathia is a term sometimes used in veterinary medicine, particularly for cats, to describe a constellation of urinary tract signs without a definitive diagnosis. It generally refers to symptoms such as straining to urinate, frequent urination, urinating outside the litter box, blood in the urine, or pain during urination. These clinical signs can be indicative of various underlying conditions affecting the urinary system.

The causes of uropathia are diverse and can range from infections, such as bacterial cystitis, to urolithiasis (stones in the bladder or urethra), anatomical abnormalities, or even behavioral issues. A significant cause, especially in younger cats, is feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC), a condition where inflammation of the bladder occurs without a clear identifiable cause like infection or stones. Stress is often considered a contributing factor to FIC.

Diagnosis of uropathia involves a thorough history, physical examination, and often diagnostic tests like urinalysis, urine culture, and imaging (radiographs or ultrasound) to rule out or identify specific causes. Treatment is dependent on the underlying diagnosis. If a bacterial infection is present, antibiotics are prescribed. If stones are found, dietary changes or surgical removal may be necessary. For FIC, management often focuses on reducing stress, increasing water intake, and sometimes medication to manage pain and inflammation. Because uropathia encompasses a range of symptoms with potentially serious underlying causes, prompt veterinary attention is recommended for any animal exhibiting these signs.
