Unbelievers is a broad term used to describe people who do not hold religious beliefs or do not affiliate with a religious community. In contemporary usage it commonly refers to individuals who identify as atheists, agnostics, secularists, freethinkers, or otherwise non-religious, as well as those who reject the central tenets of a specific faith without declaring a formal alternative worldview. Because belief status can be complex, the term is sometimes contested and may be applied differently in religious communities that use it to denote dissent or nonconformity.

Scholars and laypeople distinguish among various positions that fall under the umbrella of unbelief. Atheism typically asserts the nonexistence of deities; agnosticism emphasizes epistemic uncertainty about divine claims; secularism treats public life as separable from religious authority; humanism emphasizes ethical and philosophical frameworks without reliance on the supernatural. Not all unbelievers identify with a single label, and some prefer terms like non-religious or unaffiliated.

Historically, unbelief has ranged from tolerance to persecution, depending on cultural, legal, and religious contexts. In many modern liberal democracies, freedom of belief is protected, promoting pluralism; in other regions, social pressure or legal penalties can accompany disbelief. Demographic patterns vary by region: substantial shares of the population in several Western countries report no religious affiliation, while other areas have smaller non-religious populations or face restrictions on expression of disbelief.

Some critics argue that the term “unbeliever” can carry loaded or othering connotations, while others use it as a neutral descriptor. In contemporary discourse, unbelievers participate in debates over secular rights, science education, religious freedom, and the role of religion in public life.
