Individuals range in size from compact crawlers about 20–30 cm to larger, multi-legged adults nearing a meter in length. They are adapted to life in dark, mineral-rich caverns.

Etymology and naming: Ulkokuorten is a constructed term in the imagined world’s languages, intended to evoke the sense of an external-rooted, cave-dwelling people. The word is not tied to a single canonical language across works, and variants may appear.
