Cavedwelling refers to living in natural caves or cave-like spaces. It can describe human populations that use caves as shelter or homes, as well as animals that permanently inhabit caves. Cave environments are typically dark and humid, with limited ventilation, and microclimates that vary by depth and rock type.

In many regions, caves have provided shelter, habitation, or ceremonial space since prehistoric times. Archaeological records show humans occupying caves across Europe, Africa, and Asia, sometimes with modified chambers carved or expanded. Some regions developed extensive cave dwellings and rock-cut architecture that persisted into later periods.

Today, cave dwellings persist in pockets of the world as traditional homes or tourist accommodations. Notable examples include rock-cut houses and cave hotels in Cappadocia, Turkey, where architecture integrates natural cavern spaces with modern living standards.

Cave ecosystems also support specialized life. Troglobites are species adapted to perpetual darkness, often with reduced eyes and pigmentation. Troglophiles and trogloxenes use caves regularly or sporadically. Bats, insects, and crustaceans commonly inhabit caves and contribute to ecosystem processes.

Living in caves poses challenges, including humidity, limited light, air quality concerns, mold, and potential structural hazards. Conservation and safety considerations are important, and cave-dwelling practices are typically governed by regional regulations to protect both inhabitants and fragile cave environments.
