Tulisijassa is a Finnish term that broadly refers to a hearth or a fireplace. In a traditional Finnish home, the tulisijassa was a central and vital part of the dwelling, serving multiple purposes. It was primarily used for heating the living space, especially during the long and cold winters. Beyond warmth, the tulisijassa was also used for cooking. Many homes featured a baking oven incorporated into the hearth structure, allowing for the preparation of bread, pastries, and other dishes.

Historically, the design and construction of the tulisijassa varied depending on the region and the materials available. Common materials included stone, brick, and clay. The size and complexity also differed, ranging from simple open fireplaces to elaborate constructions with chimneys and integrated ovens. The smoke from the fire would be directed upwards through a chimney, preventing it from filling the living area.

The tulisijassa was more than just a functional element; it was often a social gathering point. Families would congregate around the warm hearth for meals, storytelling, and relaxation. In older, more primitive dwellings, the smoke might have been allowed to escape through a hole in the roof, a practice known as savusauna or smoke sauna, where the smoke from the fire would fill the room before being ventilated.
