Savusauna, literally “smoke sauna” in Finnish, is a traditional form of sauna in which a wood-burning stove heats the space without a tall chimney. During heating, the fire burns in a large stone oven and smoke fills the chamber, often leaving the interior darkened with soot and scented by resin from the wood.

Because there is no permanent flue, the room is filled with smoke for several hours. When the stones are hot and the air has absorbed the desired heat and aroma, the fire is allowed to burn down and the space is ventilated by opening the door or vents. The stones retain heat and provide warmth after the smoke has cleared, while the walls and ceiling are treated by decades of use to achieve a characteristic patina.

After ventilation, bathers enter to enjoy löyly, pouring or splashing water on the hot stones to create steam. The thick atmosphere, soot-coated surfaces, and smoky scent are distinctive features of a savusauna. Surfaces may be scrubbed or left to darken over time, depending on local practice and maintenance.

Traditionally associated with rural Finland and farm life, savusaunas remain a noted part of cultural heritage and are encountered in museums, demonstrations, and tourist accommodations. In modern settings, some examples incorporate a chimney or dedicated exhaust to improve air quality, while many practitioners preserve the original method to sustain its historical and experiential value.
