Tulikultasi is a Finnish term that translates to "fire gold" or "fire gilding." It refers to a traditional decorative technique used in Finland, particularly for embellishing wooden objects. This method involves applying a thin layer of gold leaf to a surface that has been prepared with a specific type of varnish. The varnish, when heated, becomes sticky and adheres to the gold leaf.

The process typically begins with carefully preparing the wooden surface, often by smoothing and priming it. A specialized, often resin-based, varnish is then applied. Once the varnish has reached the optimal stage of tackiness, which requires precise timing and temperature control, thin sheets of gold leaf are delicately laid onto the surface. Gentle pressure is applied to ensure good adhesion. After the gold leaf has been applied, any excess can be carefully brushed away, revealing the gilded design.

Tulikultasi was historically used to adorn items such as furniture, wooden boxes, and architectural elements.
