Tuimendus is a medical term used in Estonian to describe a reduced or lost sensation in a part of the body, resulting in diminished ability to feel touch, temperature, or pain. It can be temporary or persistent and may affect a small area or a larger region.

Most commonly, tuimendus occurs after compression or prolonged pressure on a limb, such as sitting with crossed legs or lying on a limb. It can also arise from nerve injury, circulatory problems, chronic conditions such as diabetes, or from infections, inflammatory diseases, or certain medications. Other contributing factors include vitamin deficiencies, alcohol use, autoimmune disorders, and neurological diseases.

Symptoms vary by location and cause but commonly include numbness, a reduced sense of touch, tingling or “pins and needles,” burning or aching sensations, and in some cases muscle weakness or coordination problems. When tuimendus is persistent or accompanied by weakness, facial changes, vision problems, or sudden onset, urgent medical evaluation may be necessary.

Diagnosis typically starts with a clinical history and neurological examination. Doctors may perform sensory testing and order tests such as blood work, imaging (MRI or CT), and electrodiagnostic studies (nerve conduction studies and electromyography) to identify nerve or spinal involvement and rule out systemic conditions.

Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause. Temporary numbness from pressure usually resolves on its own. Persistent tuimendus may require managing diabetes or vascular issues, treating nerve entrapment with physical therapy or surgery, correcting deficiencies, adjusting medications, or using medications directed at neuropathic pain. Prognosis depends on the cause and the timeliness of treatment.
