These processes can be broadly divided into two main categories: conventional offset printing and modern digital printing.

Offset printing, an established method developed in the early 20th century, relies on transferring ink from a plate to a rubber blanket and then onto the substrate. It is prized for high-quality, high-volume output and is commonly used for newspapers, books, and packaging. Key steps involve plate making, inking, and blanket transfer, with the final stage being the direct contact of the substrate with the inked surface.

Digital printing, on the other hand, uses large-format inkjet or laser printers to deposit ink directly onto the substrate without plates. This method reduces setup costs, allows for rapid prototyping, and supports short-run, highly customized jobs. Digital technologies have expanded the range of usable materials, including flexible films and technical textiles.

Other specialized techniques include screen printing, commonly employed for textiles and signage; gravure printing, favored for high-clarity images on flexible media; and laser engraving, which offers precise material removal for decorative and functional labels. Each process presents distinct advantages regarding speed, resolution, and material compatibility. The choice among them depends on factors such as production volume, cost constraints, and the desired aesthetic or functional properties of the final product.
