Træthedstyrken, often translated as fatigue strength or endurance limit, is a crucial concept in materials science and engineering, particularly when dealing with cyclic loading. It refers to the maximum stress a material can withstand for an infinite number of load cycles without experiencing failure due to fatigue. Fatigue is a phenomenon where materials weaken and eventually fracture under repeated application of stresses that are significantly lower than their ultimate tensile strength or yield strength.

The träthedstyrken is a material property determined through experimental testing, typically using rotating bending fatigue machines. These tests involve applying a fluctuating stress to a specimen and counting the number of cycles until fracture. By testing multiple specimens at different stress levels, a stress-life curve (also known as an S-N curve) can be generated. For many ferrous alloys, this curve eventually becomes horizontal, indicating a stress level below which the material will not fail, regardless of the number of cycles. Non-ferrous metals, such as aluminum and copper alloys, generally do not exhibit a distinct fatigue limit in the same way. Their S-N curves continue to descend even at very high cycle counts, meaning failure will eventually occur at any stress level, albeit after a very large number of cycles. In such cases, a fatigue strength is often specified for a finite, but very large, number of cycles, for example, 10^7 or 10^8 cycles.
