tremorin

Tremorin refers to a family of plant-specific proteins that are predicted to be integral membrane proteins and are associated with the plasma membrane. The Tremorin-like proteins are found in a wide range of land plants, with multiple Tremorin-like (TRM) genes described in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. They are generally small in size and are characterized by a single transmembrane helix, with a cytoplasmic region that often contains coiled-coil motifs, suggesting potential roles in protein–protein interactions and membrane organization.

Localization and structure

Tremorins are typically predicted to be membrane-anchored, residing at the plasma membrane and, in some cases, related endomembrane compartments. The presence of coiled-coil–rich cytoplasmic domains implies they may form oligomeric assemblies or participate in multi-protein complexes at the membrane. The exact topology (which terminus is extracellular vs. cytoplasmic) is not uniformly defined across all family members.

Function and significance

The precise cellular function of tremorins remains under investigation. They are thought to participate in membrane organization and signaling networks that influence developmental processes and responses to environmental cues. Experimental data, primarily from Arabidopsis studies, indicate that alterations in tremorin expression can affect plant growth and morphology in a context-dependent manner, suggesting roles in regulation of cell expansion, tissue patterning, or stress responses. However, functional assignments are not yet definitive, and tremorins are considered part of broader membrane-associated signaling pathways with potential interactions with other membrane proteins.

Evolution and nomenclature

Tremorin genes are conserved across diverse flowering plant lineages, with several paralogs described in model and crop species. In Arabidopsis, Tremorin-like genes are commonly designated TRMs, reflecting their membership in this protein family. Ongoing research aims to clarify their molecular partners, precise subcellular localization, and roles in plant development and physiology.
