Subcellular is an adjective describing anything related to the interior components of a cell. It is used to refer to organelles, compartments, molecules, and processes that occur within cells, as opposed to phenomena at the level of the whole organism or tissue.

Subcellular organization concerns the spatial arrangement and interaction of cellular components. Key structures include membrane-bound organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, chloroplasts (in plants and some algae), and vacuoles, along with non-membrane-bound entities like ribosomes and the cytoskeleton. These components collaborate to sustain cellular life, growth, and adaptation.

Specific organelles have specialized roles. The nucleus houses genetic material and transcriptional machinery; mitochondria generate ATP and contain their own DNA; chloroplasts carry out photosynthesis in plants. The endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus participate in protein and lipid synthesis, modification, and trafficking. Lysosomes and peroxisomes perform degradation and detoxification. Vesicles transport cargo between compartments, while the cytoskeleton provides structure and serves as tracks for motor proteins.

Subcellular localization refers to the particular location within a cell where a molecule or complex functions, influencing interactions and activity. Subcellular studies employ techniques such as microscopy, immunolabeling, and subcellular fractionation by differential centrifugation to separate and analyze components by size, density, and location. Subcellular concepts are foundational to cell biology, physiology, and molecular biology, and are essential for understanding cellular signaling, metabolism, and disease mechanisms.
