Trekgewicht is the maximum weight that a vehicle, machine, or device is certified to tow behind it. In Dutch-language contexts, trekgewicht is commonly used to describe towing capacity. The value is usually stated by the manufacturer and may be influenced by design, braking, and safety considerations. It is not a fixed property of the empty vehicle; it depends on configuration and applicable regulations.

It applies to cars, vans, trucks and trailers such as caravans and boat trailers. Trekgewicht is distinct from the vehicle’s own curb weight or payload, which are the masses the vehicle can carry on its own; the tow rating concerns mass pulled behind the vehicle and may involve dynamic effects during movement.

Determination and limits: The official trekgewicht is provided by the manufacturer for standard configurations. It depends on braking capacity, engine torque, transmission, suspension, hitch type and overall stability. In many countries, a separate limit called the gross combination weight rating (GCWR) defines the maximum combined weight of the vehicle and trailer, and this value may constrain the usable tow weight beyond the bare hitch rating.

Practical guidance: Always consult the owner’s manual or the VIN label for your exact figure, and never exceed the trekgewicht. Ensure the trailer weight plus its cargo stays below GCWR, and that tongue weight is appropriate (often around 10–15% of trailer mass). Use a compatible hitch, brakes, and weight-distribution equipment as required, especially for heavier or longer trailers and when towing through climbs or crosswinds.

In Dutch contexts, trekgewicht is a standard term in vehicle documentation and caravan manuals, and may differ from related concepts such as maximum trailer weight or gross trailer weight used in other languages.
