It encompasses all modes of transport—road, rail, sea, air, and inland waterways—and the intermodal and multimodal links between them. The aim is to ensure timely, cost-efficient, and reliable delivery while complying with regulatory and safety requirements.

Core activities include network design, carrier selection and procurement, route and mode optimization, capacity planning, scheduling, dispatch, and performance monitoring. Operational execution is supported by documentation management such as bills of lading, waybills, customs paperwork, and proof of delivery. Transportlogistik is often integrated with warehousing, inventory control, and order management to synchronize flows and minimize handling costs.

Technology plays a central role. Transportation management systems (TMS), route planning software, and real-time tracking enable visibility and control. Telematics, IoT sensors, RFID, and barcode systems support asset monitoring, while electronic data interchange (EDI) and APIs facilitate data exchange with shippers, carriers, and authorities. Data analytics and simulation support optimization and scenario planning.

Performance and sustainability are key concerns. Transportation costs can represent a large portion of total logistics expenses, making efficiency, reliability, and on-time delivery critical. Trends include digitalization, multimodal and green logistics, last-mile and urban logistics innovations, cold-chain management, and the integration of sustainability metrics into procurement and planning.
