Transactietypes, often referred to as transaction types, are predefined categories used in business and financial systems to classify and govern individual transactions. They define how a transaction behaves within the application, which accounts are updated, what taxes or discounts apply, and which workflows and validations are triggered. By standardizing transaction behavior, transactietypes support consistent posting, audit trails, and reporting across modules such as sales, procurement, inventory, and finance.

Each transactietype typically has attributes or meta-data, including a unique code, a descriptive name, a description of its purpose, the required data elements, the accounts or ledgers affected, posting rules, currency or tax considerations, and access permissions. Systems may also tie transactietypes to localization rules, legal requirements, and industry practices.

Common examples include sales order, sales invoice, purchase order, purchase invoice, customer payment, vendor payment, inventory transfer, journal entry, expense claim, and payroll payment. In some systems, receiving and returns are separate types. In other contexts, transactietypes may be grouped into broader categories such as monetary transactions, non-monetary transactions, or adjustments.

Relation to transactions: A transactietype is a category; the actual event is a transaction instance that carries values such as date, amount, involved entities, and line items, and is posted according to the rules of its transactietype.

Implementation and governance: Organizations should align transactietypes with chart of accounts, tax codes, and internal controls. They may require mapping for integrations, ensure consistent naming, and monitor usage for compliance and reporting.
