Trükitehnikas refers to the methods and processes used in printing. This broad term encompasses various techniques for transferring ink or other substances onto a substrate, such as paper, fabric, or plastic, to create images, text, or patterns. The development of printing techniques has a long history, starting with rudimentary block printing and evolving to highly sophisticated digital methods.

One of the oldest and most fundamental trükitehnikas is letterpress printing. In this method, raised type or plates are inked and then pressed directly onto the paper. This technique was dominant for centuries but has largely been replaced by offset lithography. Offset printing is a more indirect method where ink is transferred from a plate to a rubber blanket, and then from the blanket to the printing surface. This allows for finer detail and wider application.

Another significant category is gravure printing, also known as rotogravure. This process uses an engraved cylinder where the image is recessed. Ink fills these recessed areas, and excess ink is scraped off before the paper is pressed onto the cylinder, transferring the ink from the etched cells. Gravure is often used for high-volume, high-quality printing like magazines and packaging.

Screen printing, or serigraphy, is a versatile technique where ink is pushed through a mesh screen onto the substrate. The areas of the screen not intended to be printed are blocked out, allowing ink to pass only through the open mesh. This method is suitable for a wide range of materials and surfaces, including textiles, ceramics, and electronics.

In the modern era, digital printing technologies have revolutionized trükitehnikas. These methods, such as inkjet and laser printing, do not require printing plates and allow for direct printing from digital files. This enables short print runs, personalization, and rapid turnaround times, making them indispensable for various applications today.
