Top speed is the greatest speed an object or vehicle can reach under a defined set of conditions. Because conditions like air density, altitude, temperature, and wind influence resistance, top speed is not a universal constant for a given model.

Several factors determine top speed. The powertrain’s usable power and torque, drivetrain losses, and gearing set the engine speed reachable at high velocity. Aerodynamic drag, quantified by the drag coefficient and frontal area, increases with the square of speed and becomes the dominant limiting factor at high velocities. Designers trade-off choices among weight, aero, gearing, and stability to achieve a desired top speed while maintaining safety and reliability.

Measurement and reporting vary by context. Top speed is typically determined from controlled tests on a track or closed course, using GPS, radar, or onboard sensors to identify the maximum attained speed under specified atmospheric conditions. Conditions such as wind, altitude, and surface quality are noted because they substantially affect the figure.

In practice, top speed is one of several performance metrics. It provides a point of comparison among models but may not reflect real-world performance, which is also influenced by acceleration, braking, handling, and efficiency.
