Toolmakers produce components such as cutting tools, jigs, fixtures, gauges, and form tools that enable consistent production and measurement. They typically work in machine shops, toolrooms, or manufacturing plants, collaborating with designers, machinists, and production teams.

Key responsibilities include interpreting blueprints and technical specifications, selecting materials, and fabricating or modifying tooling to achieve required tolerances and surface finishes. They set up and adjust tools on machines, perform precision measurements, and verify tool performance using metrology equipment such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and coordinate measuring machines. Toolmakers may also design fixtures and gauges, troubleshoot tooling problems, perform preventive maintenance, and refurbish worn components to extend tool life.

Tools and processes commonly used by toolmakers include lathes, milling machines, grinders, EDM and wire EDM, as well as CAD/CAM software for design and planning. Mastery of metrology, material properties, cutting conditions, and fixturing is essential. In modern settings, toolmakers frequently work with CNC machines and rapid prototyping methods, balancing traditional hand skills with digital tooling workflows.

Training typically involves an apprenticeship or formal technical education, often followed by on-the-job experience. Qualifications may include a journeyman status or other recognized certifications. Core skills include precision measurement, problem solving, attention to detail, understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and a strong emphasis on safety. The role is vital to maintaining quality, reducing downtime, and enabling efficient, repeatable production across many industries.
