A toapult was a large, mobile siege engine that was used to launch projectiles such as rocks, stones, and iron shot over the walls of fortifications and castles. It consisted of a wooden frame with two or more pulleys, a winch, and a throwing arm. The throwing arm was typically a wooden or metal beam that was lifted using the pulleys and winch to a certain height, where it would be released, propelling the projectile forward.

Operating the toapult was a labor-intensive process, requiring a team of soldiers or crossbowmen to turn the winch and lift the throwing arm. Once the toapult was loaded with a projectile, it would be fired by releasing the throwing arm, which would follow a parabolic trajectory, allowing the projectile to reach high trajectories over the enemy's defenses.

The use of toapults as a siege engine provided medieval armies with a way to break through the defenses of enemy fortifications, which were often heavily fortified and defended. However, the toapult was not without its weaknesses, being labor-intensive and relatively slow to load and fire.

Similarly designed siege engines, such as the catapult and the trebuchet, also utilized a large throwing arm to propel projectiles at enemy fortifications. However, the toapult stood out for its unique and labor-intensive operating mechanism.
