Timanttirakenteen refers to the crystal structure of diamond. Diamond crystallizes in a face-centered cubic (FCC) lattice, specifically a variant known as the diamond cubic structure. In this arrangement, each carbon atom is covalently bonded to four other carbon atoms in a tetrahedral geometry. This local tetrahedral coordination extends throughout the crystal, forming a highly interconnected three-dimensional network.

The diamond cubic structure can be visualized as two interpenetrating FCC lattices, offset from each other by one-quarter of the body diagonal. Each atom in this structure is located at a position within the FCC lattice that is equivalent to having it at the origin of a basis of two atoms, where one atom is at (0,0,0) and the other is at (1/4, 1/4, 1/4) relative to the conventional unit cell. This unique arrangement results in a very dense packing of atoms.

The strong, directional covalent bonds between carbon atoms are responsible for many of diamond's characteristic properties, including its exceptional hardness, high melting point, and thermal conductivity. The tetrahedral bonding also leads to a highly transparent material in the visible light spectrum, as the electronic band gap is large. The arrangement of atoms in the diamond cubic structure is crucial for understanding diamond's optical, mechanical, and electrical behaviors.
