Tillskärning is a Swedish term that translates to "cutting" or "cutting out" and is most commonly used in the context of sewing and garment making. It refers to the process of transferring a pattern onto fabric and then cutting out the individual pieces that will be assembled to create a garment. This is a critical step in the creation of any sewn item, as accurate tillskärning ensures that the finished product will fit correctly and have the intended shape and drape.

The process typically begins with a sewing pattern, which consists of paper pieces representing different parts of the garment, such as sleeves, bodice, and skirt. These pattern pieces are laid out on the fabric according to specific instructions, often referred to as a "cutting layout" or "fabric layout." This layout aims to maximize fabric usage and ensure that the grainline of the fabric runs correctly through each pattern piece, which is essential for the garment's proper hang and wear. The grainline is usually indicated on the pattern piece by a long arrow.

Once the pattern pieces are positioned, they are often secured in place with pins. Then, using sharp fabric shears or a rotary cutter and mat, the fabric is carefully cut around the edges of each pattern piece. Seam allowances, which are extra fabric added to the edges of pattern pieces for sewing, are also cut at this stage if they are not already incorporated into the pattern. Precision is paramount during tillskärning, as any inaccuracies can lead to difficulties during assembly and an ill-fitting final garment. The term can also be used more broadly to refer to the cutting of other materials, such as paper or leather, according to a specific design.
