Tiiger is the Dutch name for the animal commonly known in English as the tiger (Panthera tigris). Tigers are large, solitary carnivores with a muscular build, an orange coat, black stripes, and a white underbelly. The stripe pattern is unique to each individual, much like fingerprints in humans. Males are typically larger than females, with weights that can reach up to about 320 kilograms in some individuals.

Tigers are native to Asia, from the Indian subcontinent to Siberia, though their historical range was broader. Today they occupy fragmented habitats in forests, mangrove swamps, and grasslands, depending on the subspecies. They require large territories and abundant prey, such as deer and wild boar, and they are strong swimmers.

Tigers are largely solitary and territorial. They mark and defend their ranges using scent markings and scrapes, and communicate through vocalizations such as roars. Reproduction occurs year-round in many areas; the gestation period is about 93 to 111 days, producing litters of two to four cubs. Cubs stay with the mother for up to two years, learning hunting and survival skills before dispersing.

Conservation status: Tigers are listed as Endangered by the IUCN, with several subspecies at heightened risk or possibly extinct in the wild. Global populations are small and declining due to habitat loss, poaching, and depletion of prey. Conservation efforts focus on protected areas, anti-poaching measures, wildlife corridors, and international cooperation.
