A through hike, or through-hike, refers to hiking a long-distance trail from end to end in one continuous journey, typically completed in a single season. The term is widely used in North America but applies to similar long-distance routes worldwide. Through-hikers often plan for months on the trail, though some complete a route in two seasons or more.

The best-known through-hikes in North America are the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, and Continental Divide Trail, collectively known as the Triple Crown of American trails. Other notable routes include the Pacific Northwest Trail, the Florida Trail, and the Colorado Trail. Distances generally range from about 2,000 to 3,100 miles, with typical through-hikes lasting roughly four to seven months, depending on pace and conditions. Start times commonly aim for spring to avoid winter weather and late-season snow.

Planning centers on lightweight gear, long-distance resupply, navigation, and weather awareness. Common equipment includes a backpacking tent or shelter, stove, clothing adaptable to varied climates, and a system for resupply through towns or mail drops. Some trails require permits or have seasonal restrictions. Water availability, bear and wildlife safety, altitude, and terrain influence route selection and timing. Adhering to Leave No Trace ethics and trail etiquette is emphasized within through-hiking communities.

Thruhiking has a strong social dimension, with communities of hikers sharing journals, blogs, and forums. Hikers are often identified by trail names. Completion of one of the major routes is widely recognized within the hiking world; finishing all three—AT, PCT, and CDT—constitutes the Triple Crown.
