Textilecoated refers to fabrics that have been covered with a polymer or other coating to alter surface properties and performance. The coating is applied to one or both sides of a base fabric and can form a continuous film or be bonded as a laminated layer. Common coating materials include polyurethane (PU), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), silicone, acrylics, and fluoropolymers. Coatings may be applied by extrusion, knife-over-roll, calendering, or lamination, and can be solvent-based or water-based.

Coated textiles are chosen for weather resistance, liquid barriers, chemical resistance, and increased durability. They can be engineered to be waterproof while retaining breathability through microporous structures or specialty polymers. However, many conventional coatings reduce air permeability and stretch, affecting comfort and drape. Applications span outdoor apparel and equipment (rainwear, tents, backpacks), upholstery and automotive interiors, tarpaulins, geotextiles, and industrial bags.

Performance depends on coating thickness, adhesion to the fabric, and the compatibility between coating and textile. Common tests assess abrasion, tear strength, water resistance, and hydrostatic head, as well as coating cracking under flexing. Environmental and regulatory considerations include the recyclability of coated textiles and emissions from solvent-based processes; PVC coatings raise specific disposal concerns, while newer water-based or solvent-free formulations seek to mitigate impacts. Standards for coated textiles are issued by organizations such as ISO, ASTM, and EN, with requirements varying by end-use.
