Terrasseringen is the act of creating terraces on sloped terrain to produce flat, cultivable surfaces. The term is used in Scandinavian languages to describe terrace construction and related land-modification work. Terracing involves shaping the land into a sequence of flat steps, typically stabilized with retaining structures such as stone walls, masonry, gabions, or timber, and often accompanied by drainage channels to manage water flow. The terraces are laid out along natural contour lines to slow runoff, reduce soil erosion, and improve water infiltration, thereby increasing the productive capacity of marginal land.
