ternyata

Ternyata is an Indonesian and Malay adverb meaning "it turns out" or "as it turns out." It introduces information that reveals a fact, often contrasting with an assumption or expectation.

Etymology and form: The word is formed from the root nyata, meaning real or true, together with the prefix ter-. As an established expression, ternyata signals a discovery or correction of a prior belief in a sentence.

Usage: It is used in both spoken and written Indonesian and Malay and is commonly placed at the start of a clause to present new information that alters the listener's or reader’s understanding. It can convey surprise, relief, or disappointment and is flexible enough for narrative, journalistic, and everyday contexts. In some cases it may be followed by bahwa to introduce a stated proposition, or stand alone to reveal a fact.

Examples: Saya pikir dia tidak datang, ternyata dia datang. (I thought she wouldn’t come, but it turns out she did.) Ternyata harga tiketnya jauh lebih mahal dari yang saya kira. (It turns out the ticket price is much higher than I thought.) Ternyata dia sudah pergi ketika saya sampai. (It turns out she had already left when I arrived.)

Notes: Ternyata carries a neutral to mildly expressive tone and is widely understood in Indonesian and Malay. In very formal prose, speakers might opt for more precise phrasing, but rupanya or nyatanya can serve as close synonyms in less formal contexts.
