Termosæt, also known as thermosetting plastics or thermosets, is a category of polymers that undergo a chemical change when heated, becoming permanently hard and inflexible. Unlike thermoplastic materials, which can be melted and reshaped multiple times, thermosets undergo a curing process where they harden irreversibly through a chemical reaction, typically triggered by heat, pressure, or catalysts.

The curing process involves cross-linking between polymer chains, forming a rigid three-dimensional network. This structure gives thermosets superior mechanical properties, including high strength, heat resistance, and chemical stability, making them suitable for applications requiring durability under harsh conditions. Common examples of thermosetting materials include epoxy resins, polyurethane, phenolic resins, and unsaturated polyesters.

Termosæt materials are widely used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and construction. In automotive manufacturing, they are employed in components like brake pads, electrical insulators, and lightweight structural parts. The aerospace industry utilizes thermosets for composite materials in aircraft parts due to their strength-to-weight ratio. Electronics benefit from thermosets in encapsulating components for protection against moisture and mechanical stress. Additionally, thermosets are found in adhesives, coatings, and molded products like kitchenware and electrical insulators.

Despite their advantages, thermosets have limitations. Once cured, they cannot be remolded or recycled through conventional thermoplastic methods, posing challenges for waste management and sustainability. However, research into thermoset recycling and biodegradable alternatives continues to address these concerns.
