Televiziune, or television, is a system for transmitting moving images and sound to a broad audience. It combines hardware such as transmitters, receivers, and display devices with content including news, drama, sports, and entertainment. Television has been a central mass medium since the mid-20th century, shaping public discourse, culture, and consumer habits.

The technology evolved from early mechanical systems to electronic television in the 1930s and 1940s, with rapid expansion in the postwar era. The late 20th century saw a shift from analog to digital broadcasting, allowing higher picture quality and more channels. In the 21st century, television has integrated with the internet, enabling streaming services, on-demand viewing, and hybrid broadcast—IPTV.

Delivery methods include terrestrial (over-the-air) broadcast, cable, satellite, and internet protocols. Digital standards vary by region (for example DVB, ATSC, ISDB) and include high-definition and ultra-high-definition formats. Content is distributed through broadcasters, pay-TV platforms, and online services.

Public broadcasting networks, private broadcasters, and regulatory bodies shape programming, licensing, and content standards. Advertising remains a major revenue source, while public service obligations and ratings drive editorial decisions. The medium continues to face regulation on issues such as privacy, competition, and access to diverse voices.

In Romania and many other countries, televiziunii is the genitive/dative singular form of televiziune, used to indicate possession or relation (for example, calitatea televiziunii). This inflected form reflects Romanian grammar rather than a separate concept.
