Tastaturskrivning is a method of typing on a keyboard, which is a primary input device for computers and other electronic devices. In this method, the user places their fingers on the home row keys, which are typically the middle row of keys on a standard QWERTY keyboard, and then uses a combination of finger movements and key presses to enter text.

Unlike stenography, which relies on trained typists recognizing verbal speech and transcribing it into written text, tastaturskrivning is based on a more mechanical approach, where the typist learns to associate specific hand movements and key presses with specific characters. This requires developing muscle memory and fine motor control, which ultimately allows the typist to enter text quickly and accurately.

The origins of tastaturskrivning are often attributed to the QWERTY keyboard layout, which was designed in the 1870s to mitigate the mechanical problems of typewriter keys jamming together. Over time, the QWERTY layout has become the de facto standard for keyboard designs, and tastaturskrivning has become the norm for typists learning to type.

While tastaturskrivning has become the most widely accepted method of typing, alternative typing methods, such as Dvorak and Colemak, have been developed with the intention of improving typing efficiency and reducing finger movement. These alternative methods have their own layouts and techniques, which can be more efficient for certain individuals, but are not widely adopted.
