Tarvisio, often referred to simply as Tarvis, is a comune in the autonomous region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, in the Province of Udine. It is located in the Canale valley at the foot of the Carnic and Julian Alps, close to the borders with Austria and Slovenia. The municipality covers a mountainous area and serves as a gateway to cross-border routes in the Alps.

Geography and highlights

The Tarvisio area is known for its alpine landscapes, forests, and lakes, including the nearby Lago di Fusine. History

The Tarvisio area has a long cross-border history. It was part of the Habsburg Empire until the end of World War I, after which it became part of Italy.
