tammipuu

Tammipuu refers to the wood of oak trees, particularly the native European oaks Quercus robur (pedunculate oak) and Quercus petraea (sessile oak). In Estonian forestry and woodworking, tammipuu denotes a durable hardwood valued for its strength, density, and attractive grain.

The wood is heavy and hard, with good crush resistance and solid natural durability when properly seasoned. It dries slowly and benefits from careful seasoning to minimize warping and splitting. The sapwood is pale, while the heartwood ranges from light brown to reddish-brown, often showing distinct growth rings and figure. Oak contains tannins that contribute to its resistance to decay and, in the context of barrelmaking, to the flavor and aging properties of wine and spirits.

Tammipuu has a long tradition in northern European craftsmanship. It is widely used for furniture, cabinetry, flooring and parquet, solid timber construction, and veneers. Because of its density and workability, it is also common in turned objects and in durable outdoor timber when properly treated. In addition, oak wood is valued in cooperage for making wine and whiskey barrels, where staves and joints benefit from its strength and tannin content.

Sustainability considerations accompany its use: oak forests in Estonia and neighboring regions are managed to balance timber production with ecological values. Responsible harvesting and long-term regeneration aim to preserve tammipuu supply while maintaining forest health and biodiversity.
