A talumist is a practitioner who works with talismans—objects believed to carry protective, healing, or empowering power. The term is not widely used in mainstream scholarship and is more commonly found in occult, esoteric, or fictional contexts. In such uses, a talumist may study the design, preparation, and use of talismans, treating them as agents that can influence luck, safety, or fortune when properly created and charged.

Etymology and scope. The word talisman derives from talismanum in Latin, with roots that trace through French and Arabic or Persian sources into the medieval European vocabulary. The concept of a talisman—an object inscribed or endowed with magical significance—has appeared in many cultures, including Islamic, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Chinese, and folk traditions. A talumist, therefore, is not tied to a single tradition but may draw on a variety of symbolic systems.
