tabrelated

Tabrelated is a term used in discussions of tabbed user interfaces to describe the relationship between individual tabs and other related content or tasks. It is not a formal standard, but a heuristic concept employed by developers, researchers, and UX designers to organize and synchronize tabbed workstreams.

Tabrelated information can be stored as metadata associated with a tab, as properties in a tab graph, or as annotations in extension software.

Applications include tab grouping, where related tabs are visually clustered; cross-tab communication, where one tab's state influences another; and session management, where the set of tabrelated tabs is restored together. In web browsers and platforms that expose tab APIs, tabrelated data can be used to build task-focused workflows, reduce context switching, and improve navigation.

Implementation approaches vary. Some systems use lightweight data attributes or tagged tab IDs; others maintain a graph of tab relationships in memory or in a persistent store. Extensions may implement tabrelated by subscribing to tab events (open, close, activate) and updating relationship links accordingly.

Challenges include performance overhead, privacy implications of cross-tab tracking, and ensuring a consistent user experience across devices and sessions. As a design pattern, tabrelated emphasizes human-centric organization of work, rather than automatic tab manipulation.
