Tööolekust (often translated as "work leave" or "occupational leave") refers to a period during which an individual is temporarily relieved from their regular work duties, typically due to health-related reasons or other personal circumstances. In many jurisdictions, including Estonia, this concept is closely tied to the legal framework governing employment and social security.

Tööolekust is most commonly associated with sickness leave, where an employee is unable to perform their job due to illness or injury. Under Estonian law, employees are entitled to sickness benefits after a certain period of absence, usually following a doctor’s certificate. The duration and conditions of tööolekust are regulated by the Employment Contracts Act and the Social Insurance Act, which outline eligibility criteria, benefit amounts, and the responsibilities of both the employer and the employee.

During tööolekust, the employee is generally not required to perform work, but they may still be subject to certain obligations, such as notifying their employer of the absence and providing medical documentation if necessary. Employers are often expected to maintain the employee’s position or find suitable temporary arrangements, though the specifics depend on the length of the leave and company policies.

Beyond sickness-related leave, tööolekust can also encompass other forms of temporary absence, such as parental leave, rehabilitation leave, or leave due to caregiving responsibilities.
