A sémaphore is a visual signaling device used for communication over distances. The most common form consists of one or more movable arms mounted on a pole. The position of these arms indicates different letters, numbers, or pre-arranged codes. Sémaphores were widely used in the 19th and early 20th centuries for maritime communication and on land for railway signaling.

The concept of visual signaling is ancient, but the mechanical sémaphore as we know it was developed in the late 18th century. Claude Chappe, a French inventor, is credited with creating the first practical optical telegraph system in 1792. This system used a long, articulated beam with two movable arms, each controlled by ropes and pulleys. By changing the angle of the beam and the arms, operators could transmit messages between stations, which relayed the signals onward.

Sémaphores revolutionized long-distance communication before the advent of the electric telegraph. They allowed for relatively rapid transmission of information across significant distances, impacting military operations, trade, and government. On railways, sémaphores were used to indicate the state of the track ahead, ensuring safe train movements.

While largely superseded by electrical and electronic communication methods, sémaphores are still employed in some niche applications. They can be found in maritime contexts for signaling between ships or from shore to ship, especially in situations where radio communication is not feasible or permitted. They also appear in some historical reenactments and as decorative elements.
