Säätöteknologia, known in English as control technology or control engineering, is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the design and implementation of systems that regulate and manage the behavior of other systems. Its primary goal is to achieve desired performance characteristics, such as stability, accuracy, speed, and efficiency, in a controlled process. This is typically accomplished by measuring key variables of the process and using this information to adjust certain inputs.

The fundamental concept in säätöteknologia involves a feedback loop. A sensor measures the current state of the system (e.g., temperature, position, speed). This measured value is then compared to a desired setpoint or target value. The difference between the measured value and the setpoint, known as the error signal, is processed by a controller. The controller then generates an output signal that manipulates an actuator, which in turn affects the process to reduce the error.

Examples include the cruise control in automobiles, the thermostat in a home heating and cooling system, the automated assembly lines in manufacturing, and the guidance systems of aircraft and spacecraft. The field draws upon principles from mathematics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, and other disciplines. Key areas of study include system modeling, analysis of system dynamics, controller design (e.g., PID controllers, optimal control, adaptive control), and implementation using hardware and software. Advances in digital computing have led to sophisticated digital controllers, allowing for more complex and robust control strategies.
