Sättningsvärden, often translated as settlement values, are a crucial concept in geotechnical engineering, particularly concerning the behavior of soil and rock under load. They represent the amount of vertical displacement or sinking that a foundation or soil mass experiences when subjected to stress. Understanding and predicting sättningsvärden is essential for ensuring the stability and serviceability of structures built on or within the ground.

There are generally two main types of settlement: immediate settlement and consolidation settlement. Immediate settlement occurs almost instantaneously upon the application of load, primarily due to the elastic deformation of soil particles and pore water. Consolidation settlement, on the other hand, is a time-dependent process that occurs in saturated, fine-grained soils like clay and silt. It results from the expulsion of pore water under pressure, leading to a reduction in soil volume and a gradual sinking.

Several factors influence sättningsvärden, including the type of soil, its geological history, the magnitude and distribution of the applied load, and the presence of groundwater. Soft clays and loose sands are more prone to significant settlement than dense sands or stiff clays. Laboratory tests, such as consolidation tests, and in-situ field measurements are employed to determine the compressibility characteristics of soils and estimate potential settlements.

Accurate prediction of sättningsvärden allows engineers to design foundations that can accommodate anticipated settlement without compromising the structural integrity or functionality of the building. In cases where significant settlement is unavoidable, engineers may recommend specific foundation types, such as deep foundations (piles or piers), or implement ground improvement techniques to reduce the settlement potential of the soil.
